Built in 1860 and set in Portland’s historic West End Neighborhood, the Victorian style home underwent a complete overhaul of the interiors while carefully preserving its exterior’s period specific massing and intricate detailing. The original home had undergone countless renovations throughout the past century and a half resulting in many awkward disconnected spaces full of ‘Yankee Ingenuity’ that needed thoughtful architectural consideration to improve the home’s flow, quality of light, and safety while modernizing its amenities and finishes that work to selectively compliment the well preserved historic elements that remained. To achieve this the design team employed a transitional style that playfully toes the line between the traditional and the contemporary. One example of this is seen the typical use of custom milled trim profiles inspired by the original window and door casings painted in contemporary monochromatic hues that pair with bold patterned wall coverings and tile surface accents playfully used throughout the home.
